About the Navagraha Temples
The Navagraha temples are nine ancient temples in the Kaveri delta region of Tamil Nadu, each dedicated to a celestial body (graha) in Hindu astrology.
Each temple has unique Chola-era architecture. The temples are spread across towns near Kumbakonam and Tiruvaiyaru. A complete tour takes 3-4 days from Bangalore at a comfortable pace. For more temple options, see our Temples Near Bangalore guide.
The Nine Temples
- Surya (Sun) — Suryanar Kovil
- Chandra (Moon) — Kailasanathar Temple, Thingalur
- Angaraka (Mars) — Vaitheeswaran Kovil
- Budha (Mercury) — Tiruvenkadu
- Brihaspati (Jupiter) — Alangudi
- Shukra (Venus) — Kanjanur
- Shani (Saturn) — Tirunallaru
- Rahu — Tirunageswaram
- Ketu — Keezhperumpallam
Planning Your Navagraha Temple Tour
Day 1: Drive to Kumbakonam
Start from Bangalore early (~5.5 hrs drive). Visit 3-4 temples in the afternoon. Overnight in Kumbakonam.
Day 2: Temple Circuit
Visit 3-4 more temples around Kumbakonam and Tiruvaiyaru. Explore the local market in the evening.
Day 3: Return to Bangalore
Visit remaining temples in the morning. Drive back to Bangalore, arriving in the evening.
